Siding Built for Ferndale's Coastal Edge of Whatcom County

Ferndale sits closer to the water than most of the communities we serve, and that changes what a house has to put up with year after year. Homes here deal with a mix that inland Whatcom County towns don't see as much of: salty, moisture-laden air moving in off Bellingham Bay and the Strait of Georgia, driving rain that comes in sideways during winter storms, and long stretches of gray, damp weather that give moss and algae plenty of time to take hold on north-facing walls and shaded siding. It's a tough combination for exterior materials, and it shows up in the siding we get called out to look at.

What Salt Air and Moisture Actually Do to Siding

Salt-laden air isn't just a coastal curiosity — it's corrosive and it holds moisture against building surfaces longer than dry inland air does. Combined with Ferndale's rainfall and the shade many lots get from mature trees, siding here is under near-constant low-grade attack. A few things we see repeatedly on local homes:

  • Moss and algae staining on shaded elevations and anywhere water sits after a storm instead of draining away
  • Paint and finish failure on wood and engineered wood products, especially where field-applied coatings weren't maintained on schedule
  • Swelling and soft spots at butt joints, corners, and anywhere water gets behind the siding and stays there
  • Fastener and trim corrosion where lower-grade hardware wasn't matched to a coastal-influenced environment

None of this means Ferndale is a bad place to own a home — it means the exterior envelope has to be chosen and installed with this climate specifically in mind, not treated the same as a house forty miles inland.

Why We Install James Hardie and Nothing Else

We made a deliberate call as a company to install only James Hardie fiber cement siding. We don't install vinyl, LP SmartSide, primed spruce, cedar, Cemplank, or Allura. That's not a marketing position — it's a standard we hold ourselves to because of what we've seen play out on homes in exactly this kind of climate.

Fiber cement is dimensionally stable and doesn't absorb moisture the way wood-based or wood-fiber products can, which matters directly in a place where damp air sits on a house for days at a time. It's also non-combustible, which is a real consideration anywhere in Washington given wildfire smoke and ember exposure in dry summer stretches. James Hardie's ColorPlus factory finish is baked on and cured under controlled conditions rather than applied on-site, so it holds up to sun, salt air, and repeated wet-dry cycling far better than a field-applied coat of paint — and it comes backed by a real, transferable finish warranty, not just a material warranty.

James Hardie also builds region-specific HZ product lines engineered for different climate zones, including the wetter, more humid conditions found in the Pacific Northwest. That's a meaningful distinction from a one-size-fits-all product, because Ferndale's exposure to marine moisture is genuinely different from what a siding product needs to handle in a drier climate.

None of this means other products are junk — LP SmartSide and cedar both have legitimate uses and loyal followings. But when we weighed long-term moisture performance, maintenance burden, and warranty strength for coastal Whatcom County conditions specifically, Hardie fiber cement was the clear choice, and it's the only thing we put our name behind.

How We Approach a Ferndale Project

Every estimate starts with a real look at the house — not just the siding, but what's underneath it. In a climate like this, we pay close attention to:

  • The condition of the water-resistive barrier and flashing details, since a good siding install is only as good as what's behind it
  • Drainage at window and door openings, decks, and roof-wall intersections, where moisture problems most often start
  • Ventilation and rainscreen detailing so moisture that does get behind the cladding has somewhere to go
  • Proper fastener selection and spacing for coastal-influenced exposure

We install to James Hardie's published specifications, including correct clearances, fastening patterns, and joint treatment — the details that determine whether a fiber cement installation performs for decades or starts giving trouble in a few years.

Beyond Siding: Roofing, Windows, and Decks

Siding rarely fails in isolation. A roof that's shedding water poorly, windows with tired flashing, or a deck ledger that's trapping moisture against the wall all put extra stress on the siding around them. Because we also handle roofing, windows, and decks, we can look at a Ferndale home's whole exterior envelope at once and flag issues before they turn into siding damage down the road, rather than patching one component while a related problem keeps working against it.

A Local Crew That Knows This Corner of Whatcom County

Working in Ferndale and the surrounding coastal parts of Whatcom County day in and day out means we're used to designing and installing for salt exposure, sideways rain, and a moss season that runs longer than it does even a short drive inland. That's a different job than siding a house in a drier, more sheltered location, and it's worth having a crew that treats it that way.

If you're noticing moss buildup, soft spots, or aging siding on your Ferndale home, we're happy to take a look and give you an honest read on what's going on and what it would take to fix it right. Reach out for a free, no-pressure estimate — there's no obligation, just a straight assessment from a local crew.
